Testing the Power Supply to Your 12v or 24v Fridge


To start a fridge compressor requires a high level of current for a milli second.  Any resistance in the wiring, or undersizing of the cables will cause the voltage to drop below the automatic cut out level when the compressor tries to start.

 To properly test the power supply to a Danfoss or ACC powered 12v or 24v system, the following testing procedure must be carried out. This will confirm if the power supply feeding the system is free of bad, loose and/or high-resistance connections. Reading the voltage on the panel or at the batteries is meaningless, as is the fact that you may have new batteries, your battery size and the capacity of the battery bank is also irrelevant.

The Process

 1.     Turn off the breaker (or remove the fuse) supplying DC power to the system.

 2.     Unplug one of the thermostat leads at the controller (if you can, make up a small circuit to link out the thermostat terminals (C & T).

 3.     Using a multi-meter, read and record the DC voltage at the battery terminals.

 4.     Next, connect the multi-meter reading DC voltage to the power terminals (+ and -) on the compressors controller, so that it can be left connected and monitored.

 5.     Turn on the breaker (or install the fuse) to the system.

 6.     Check that the voltage is the same as the voltage seen at the battery terminals.

 7.     Watching the multi-meter, reconnect the thermostat lead (or your link out circuit) and monitor the voltage continuously before, during, and after the compressor starts or attempts to start.

Interpreting power supply results

·       If the power supply is free of loose, bad, and/or high resistance connections, the voltage reading will stay very stable and only drop slightly when the compressor starts. As a general rule, on a 12v system the reading should not drop below 12v.


 ·       If, when the compressor attempts to start, the voltage reading drops significantly, a bad electrical connection should be suspected. If the voltage drop is sufficient to fall below the 10.5v (23v) cut-off built in to the controller, the compressor will stop. (At this point the voltage may return to it's original reading.) The fan (or in marine applications the pump) will continue to run for approx. 45 seconds and then the compressor will attempt a re-start. If the pre start voltage is above 11.5v (23.5v) the compressor will start or attempt to re-start again.

 WARNING  If the multi-meter you are using is a digital model, the voltage may drop below 10.5v (23v) and then recover too quickly to register on the meter. This means the compressor is attempting to start, then stopping due to low voltage, the voltage returns to its' original value, and there being no significant drop on the meter.

 ·       If the compressor starts and runs OK but stops after a short while, or when the battery charger is turned off, the voltage may be gradually dropping falling below the 10.5v (23v) cut-off point when the compressor tries to restart. This should be identified on your meter.

 ·       If the nature of the fault is such that the voltage reading drops below 10.5v (23v) even before the compressor attempts to start, a very bad electrical connection must be suspected. This is because even the small load of the fan or pump relay, both less than 0.5 amp (0.25 amp), is seemingly sufficient to reduce the voltage considerably.

What to look for

 A loose and/or high-resistance connection can be anywhere in the supply between the batteries and the controller. i.e. a bad breaker or fuse, a loose or corroded screw connection, a poorly made or corroded crimp connection, a damaged section of wire, etc.

Harmonics and Uninterruptible Power Supplies


Harmonic pollution is a growing problem in Europe and one that designers of power continuity programmes and manufacturers of UPS (uninterruptible power supplies) cannot ignore. Typical harmonic problems include the distortion of mains power supply voltage, overheating of wiring, neutral conductors, supply transformers and switchgear and nuisance tripping of breakers. Harmonics can also cause disruption to equipment on the same supply and lead to random failures.

Harmonics are caused by voltage or current waveforms with frequencies that are multiples of the fundamental frequency – in Europe, 50Hz (50 cycles per second). The multiples are always ordered in a specific sequence: for example, the 2nd harmonic is 100Hz (2x50Hz), the third 150Hz and the fourth 200Hz and so on.

Harmonics and total power factor – implications for UPS sizing. Harmonics are also closely related to power factor management – and another key aspect of uninterruptible power supply system design and implementation. The displacement power factor is only applicable to the fundamental frequency (50Hz in Europe) and therefore does not take into account the power factor generated by any harmonics induced into the mains power supply by the load itself (referred to as the distortion power factor and produced by the harmonics produced by non-linear loads). The combination of the displacement power factor and the distortion power factor gives what is known to UPS systems experts as the true power factor. When correctly sizing a UPS, an understanding of this is critical.

Mitigation of total harmonics distortion. Harmonics issues need to be addressed at the design stage of any power continuity plan. Not least, because consumers are responsible for the harmonic levels introduced into their three-phase mains power supply.

A UPS can sometimes be fitted with a harmonic filter (post installation) but this can be a costly and inelegant solution as extensive internal wiring changes may be required. For a transformer-based UPS, using a 12-pulse rectifier in place of a 6-pulse set will reduce the levels of THDi (total harmonic distortion). Coupling this with a passive filter will provide further reduction to around 4%.

For a transformerless uninterruptible power supply, THDi levels of less than 4% can be achieved by installing an active harmonic filter. However, levels as low as 3% can now be achieved by some designs whose rectifiers are IGBT (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor) based. This can remove the need for an additional active harmonic filter and simplify the UPS design process. Such designs are expected to become the norm: not only do they reduce initial costs, but they allow a smaller UPS system footprint whilst increasing input power factors.

A popular approach to reduce the effect of leading power factors on a UPS installation is to use an active harmonic filter with power factor correction on the UPS output. This presents the UPS with a more acceptable load, but results in higher capital and installation costs, lower efficiency and a greater footprint.

The ATX form factor is developed by Intel in 1995. ATX is similar to LPX in physical dimensions. The difference between the two is that the power pass through-outlet for the monitor has been removed from ATX. Another difference is that in ATX, the cooling fan is mounted along the inner side of the power supply. With this kind of arrangement, the fan draws air in from the
back of the chassis and blows it inside across the motherboard.

The SFX form factor style power supply is 100 mm wide, 125 mm deep, and 63.5 mm in height. It includes a 60 mm power supply fan for cooling. The main SFX motherboard connector is in the same shape and size as the ATX connector. The one difference here is that the SFX power supply specification does not support the -5V compatibility voltage and, therefore, should not be used with motherboards that have ISA slots.
