With USB devices becoming ever more ubiquitous, USB hubs are becoming more and more useful as well. And with more and more USB hubs on the market, it can be hard to decide what to get. Below are 5 tips on choosing the best USB hub for yourself.
USB hubs with anything between 3 and 13 ports can be found easily on the market, but is more really better? There's no point in buying a 13-port hub if you don't plan on using 13 USB devices simultaneously with your computer or OTG smart device; you'll only be getting a heavier, less portable device that you won't even need. Seven tends to be a good middle number, and if you are looking for something more portable, a 4-port hub would be the way to go.
Are you looking for a hub that you can take along with a laptop, or do you just plan to use the hub at home with a desktop? Hubs of all sizes exist to meet your needs, whatever they may be. Miniature 4-port hubs like the one in the picture on the right can be easily taken with you wherever you go, allowing you to use multiple USB devices simultaneously with your computer or OTG device. Vertical desktop hubs like the one in the picture on the left, meanwhile, offer you more ports while saving space. Horizontal hubs likes the ones shown in point 1 can be found in abundance, too, though these tend to take up more space and be harder to rearrange than vertical ones.
With more and more new computers featuring USB 3.0 ports, more and more USB 3.0 hubs have come onto the market as well. USB 3.0 offers transfer speeds of up to 5 Gbps theoretically, which is ten times faster than that of USB 2.0. However, if your computer doesn't have any USB 3.0 ports (and since pretty much all smart devices are still using USB 2.0), then there's no point in getting a USB 3.0 hub, not unless you are planning to upgrade your computer soon.
A good number of hubs these days feature charging ports in addition to standard USB ports. These charging ports are dedicated to charging, and while some ports can only output 1A of power, others can output 2.4A, making them just as fast as some external batteries or AC adapters. Now, instead of having to get up to plug your phone or tablet in, you can just connect it to your hub, letting you continue working on your computer without too much interruption. However, if you what value most is portability and/or you already have multi-port USB chargers, then this sort of hub may not be so necessary.
In addition to the charging capabilities above, many USB hubs often feature other fancy abilities as well. Some hubs come with card readers, while others include OTG cables, allowing them to be used straight out of the box with OTG devices. Still others, such as the one in the picture on the left above, include a stand feature that allows you to use your device handsfree. If you don't have a separate card reader, OTG cable, or stand, you might want to consider a hub with these extra features. On the other hand, if you do, then a simpler hub might suffice.
